Diwali, the Hindu festival of great religious, spiritual and social relevance is celebrated in the month of Kartik which comes between the English calendar months of October and November. Normally it is celebrated towards the month of October but sometimes due to the increase of lunar movements it is also celebrated in the month of November.
Most of the important Hindu festivals are celebrated when the sun is in ascending phase but Diwali festival is celebrated when there is no sun ie it is celebrated on an ‘Amavasya’ which is no- moon phase. Celebrated throughout India with great enthusiasm and festive zeal. The day marks the return of Lord Rama from the exile of 14 years after killing the demon king Ravana. The Lord Rama was coroneted as the king of Ayodhya and people lit their houses with candles and ‘deepaks’ which is an earthen pot of small size filled with oil and butter with a cotton wick lit in great numbers and arranged on the houses, terraces, walls, attics which dispels the darkness of moonless light filled with the light of happiness and wisdom.
The Diwali festival is the day when Hindus worship the Goddess of wealth – Lakshmi and on the main festival day which is in fact the 3rd day of the festival with great devotion and faith. People decorate and light their houses. Flowers , garlands, sweets, sugarcanes, sugar candy toys, fruits, specially custard apple, sweet potato, popcorns are brought specially for offering the Godess Lakshmi. One of the highlight of the festival is the fancy fireworks and crackers display by the people.
