The city is located on the banks of river Sabarmati which flows from between the city. The foundation stone of this city was laid by the king Ahmad Shah I of Gujarat sultanate on 26 February 1411; it was declared as the capital city of Gujarat Sultanate on 4th of March 1411 by king Ahmad Shah I himself. This ancient city has its root connected to Vedic era also, legends indicate that ancient sage Dadhichi used to live here on the banks of river Sabarmati.
