Chand Baori Step Well of Abhaneri near Jaipur

As the present age man made marvels surprise us, the ancient man made marvel which is located in the Abhaneri village of the Indian state of Rajasthan is no less alluring. In India during ancient times, step wells which are known as ‘Baori’ in Hindi were built so that the water could be preserved and could be provided to the people throughout the year. One should learn from the fact that the people of that era had the idea of water conservation and that is what the modern society lacks. Since Rajasthan was a hot region, some of the big and ancient Baoris are located here.

Chand Baori is a phenomenal structure which is visited by history lovers throughout the year, the specific date of the Baori is unknown but it was built during the 8th century and is one of the largest step walls in the world. Around 64 feet deep with 13 floors, the Baori has 3,500 steps so that even there was no or less rain during the year, the people could easily go much down the well for collecting water. It was named after King Chanda of the Chauhan dynasty who built this Baori for his people. The steps have perfect symmetry and are a delight to see and the walls of Chand Baori have some beautiful and delicate carvings.

Chand Boari has also been used as a film location in Hollywood movies like The Dark Knight Rises , Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and many more. Near the Chand Baori, the ancient temple of Harshat Mata is located which is worth visiting. The temple was built during 800 AD and the Kind ordered the construction of this temple next to the Baori so that the Baori always remained full with water and the village of Abhaneri never had to face the problem of water shortage. These are quite amazing works of engineering and beauty and you can really appreciate this part of the ancient history of India.
