Another jewel in the city of Jaipur is the famous Jal Mahal. ‘Jal’ in Hindi means water and ‘Mahal’ means palace thus Jal Mahal means the Water palace. The Jal Mahal is located in the middle of the Man Sagar Lake which gives it a spectacular look. The Maharajas of Jaipur desired to have such a place during summer which would sooth them during the scorching heat of Rajasthan and then finally came the idea of Jal Mahal. The stunning palace was built on an island surrounded by the lake and the Maharajas would spent some quality time in the balconies of the palace with cool breeze flowing and which would enhance the aura with some tranquilizing music.
The palace was constructed on the orders of Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh 1st in the year 1750. Unlike other lakes in Rajasthan there is no provision for boat ride or entry inside the palace but a walk along the bank of the lake during the evening at the time of the sunset is an absolute pleasure. Surrounded by the beautiful Aravali Hills, the area is also home to some of the migratory bird species like large flamingo, great crested grebe, pintail and pochards. It is hard to imagine the caliber of the masons of that period that there has not been any water sewage inside the palace for the past 250 years.

The palace is constructed in Rajasthani style using Yellow Sandstone. It appears by looking that the Palace is a single structure with no stories but actually there are five stories inside the palace along with several complexes. It is one of the favourite destinations of wedding couples to get their pre-wedding portrait with the Jal Mahal in the background. Standing on the banks of the lake and gazing at this marvelous structure surrounded by water is worth every minute.
